“Do. Or do not. There is no try.” — Yoda, Jedi Master
Well, Boeing did it. And Star Wars geeks, fanatics and junkies are rejoicing. The aerospace manufacturer has revealed All Nippon Airways’ new 787-9 Dreamliner, which is painted to resemble Star Wars droid R2-D2.
As Star Wars theme music played and R2-D2 and his buddy C-3PO stood watch, the jet rolled out from Boeing’s wide-body assembly line facility in Everett, Wash., on Saturday.
Boeing employees have been working for months on the exterior of the jet, the first commercial aircraft to feature a Star Wars character. Boeing announced plans for the R2-D2-themed 787 in April. It is the first of three Star Wars-inspired jets for ANA.
The plane is set to begin flying Oct. 18. Its first flight with passengers is scheduled to run between Tokyo and Vancouver, British Columbia, according to the airline. Not exactly a mission to destroy a Death Star, but it'll do.
A Business Journal designer, who falls into the category of "Star Wars fanatic," worked tirelessly to secure this statement from R2-D2's spokesman on Naboo:
"When asked about having his likeness emblazoned on a Boeing 787, R2-D2 said: 'Beep-Boop-Beep-Beep!'"
